Read-Aloud Tips for Grown-ups
Turn any book you and your child love to read into a successful Read Aloud:
Before Reading
Read the book ahead of time.
Choose books that would be interesting to your child.
Set aside enough time. At least 15 minutes.
Think of questions to help your child relate to the characters, the setting or the story.
Practice reading the story.
While Reading
Say the title, author and illustrator, and talk about the cover image.
Read slowly and let the child look at the pictures.
Introduce new vocabulary words whenever you get the chance.
Ask questions, and ask the children to predict what might happen next.
Engage your child in the story: Did this ever happen to you? What would you do? What does this remind you of?
After Reading
Make connections and comparisons with other stories you’ve read together. How are they similar or different?
Get your child’s opinions about what the characters did or about events in the story.
Act out their favorite parts!
Encourage your child to write or draw what they liked or didn’t like about the book.
